Twilight of the Gods - Tony Klinger

Tony Klinger
Twilight of The Gods

John Blake Publishing
2009

ISBN 978-1-84454-766-1

I don't honestly know what to make of this book, apart from the fact that it is a miracle that The Kids Are Alright ever got made.

This is a story concerning the making of The Kids Are Alright film from one of the protaganists. Tony Klinger was initially hired to direct TKAA by Bill Curbishley, but unbeknownst to the rest of the band Pete Townshend had already agreed that Jeff Stein could make the film.

As the story unfolds, Bill Curbishley comes out of it very badly, motivated by money and self promotion, Pete comes out as a being a diva, the story regarding John and anti semetic comments - are disturbing, Keith totally out of control and Roger comes out of it probably better than the rest.

From the film side Sydney Rose manipulated to high heaven, Jeff Stein somewhat of a brat and Klinger himself "the victim" and scapegoat.

But this is a version of events, I suspect everyone involved could give a version.

That the film was subject to delays and huge cost over runs is generally accepted, but this book tries to explain why and to give some insight about why. It does make for an interesting read, and it could never be accused of fawning over the band.

It is not the easiest of books to read, and to put it mildly Klinger should have left well alone telling any of the background Who story, it just doesn't flow, and stick to telling the story he does have first hand knowledge about - The Kids film. The motivation would appear to be to clean the slate and show the problems on the film were not his fault, putting the book out 30 years after the event does appear to be a little pointless as there are few that still care about what happened.

Unfortunately in Klinger's version of events he comes across as the one who gave all the answers but was ignored. He does not seem to be able to accept any is his fault. His relationship with Stein is one hell of an ego clash and down to a pissing contest. Klinger doing things via Curbishley where as Stein had access to the band.

If you can pick up a cheap copy its probably worth a read, but I wouldn't spend a lot of money on this book. It is one of the few books I have ever read where everyone comes across as self serving egotistical bast@rds. That's show business

2009 Who Are You?

As of today there have been nearly 2300 downloads of the articles on the blog. With the 1990 articles I've just put up there are around 230 articles on the site, some of which have been downloaded about 50 times.

For my interest

Who's downloading the articles? it wouldbe nice to hear from some of you, and find some people with a similar interest.

What other material would you like to be made available? there are articles from 2000 onwards but I need to check if any are still available as back issues from the publishers, but anything else - I've got some ideas.

What have you thought of the articles? You enjoyed the read.

Theres a fair few where I am not certain of publication dates can you fill in the gaps?

I know I do not have every article ever published, has anyone got anything else they would like to donate?

If you feel shy about posting, please drop me a line to longliverock@btinternet.com it would be nice to hear from you - don't worry I won't be scamming you for any money.

Highly Recommended books

Recommended books.

I've read most of the books on The Who, my recommended are

Biographies
Dear Boy - Tony Fletcher
This is one of the great biographies and goes beyond the usual "Moon the Loon " stories, and actually tries to explain Keith's character.

Amazing Journey / Who Are You - Mark Wilkerson
Most books that owe their content primarily from other media sources basically tell the same stories. This book goes beyond that, and with the input from pete and some of his inner circle it is probably the definitive Townshend biography. Pete has always been a great interview subject, but views his change over time. This book puts various Pete quotes into context, before they were altered with hindsight.

Anyway Anyhow Anywhere Matt kent and Andy Neil
Maximum RnB - Richard barnes.
In alot of ways these two books tell the same story, but in slightly different ways. They are both great reads and lavishly illustrated. For me AAA (in the large format) has the slight edge.

The Who concert guide
Although a lot of the information is available on line, it is great to have it in a book. Although there is probably more content in the second edition, I prefer the first edition.

This though does have the rider I have not read the Genesis books.

Whose Who - Brian Ashley and Steve Monnery

Whose Who - Brian Ashley and Steve Monnery

1978
New English Library
ISBN 450044173

Another impulse buy from ebay. I have only scanned it so far and never felt the urge to read it more carefully. Contains a lot of interview material primarily from UK magazines.

This was probably the first Who book published after Keith's death, and screams cash in.

2008 Programme

2008 Programme I got from the Indigo/O2 shows.

This is another album sized programme, with 36 pages.

No text beyond the tour credits. Photos are a mix of 2007 shots and the others featuring Entwistle and Moon.

Nice programme for the 2007 photos, where as the older ones have been seen umpteen times before.

I don't know if this differs in any way from the programme from the US dates in 2008.

A Fortnight of Furore – Andy Neill

A Fortnight of Furore – The Who and The Small Faces Down Under – Andy Neill

Mutley Press
1998

This is a wonderful little book (less than 50 pages), collecting up first hand stories by interviewing a number of the protagonists on the (disastrous) 1968 Australasia tour. Also included are press cuttings from the local press, various adverts and crowd photos from shows and a complete reprint of the 1968 tour programme.

This has all the feel of a labour of love.

Lifehouse - Pete Townshend with Jeff Young

Lifehouse - Pete Townshend with Jeff Young

1999, The Enviromental Picture Library
ISBN 0-7434-0845-4

This is the script for Lifehouse as performed on the BBC. Along with probably the clearest synopsis of Lifehouse by Pete Townshend.

Ths script is also available as part of the Lifehouse Chronicles box set.

Horses Neck - Pete Townshend

Horses Neck - Pete Townshend

1985, Faber and Faber
ISBN 0-571-13873-X

An interesting collection of short stories by Pete Townshend. It shows more depth of ideas than most of his contempories have ever produced.

Quadrophenia - Alan Fletcher.

Quadrophenia - Alan Fletcher.

1979 Corgi
ISBN 0-552-11183-X

An entertaining, though totally unnecessary adaption of the Quadrophenia movie.

The Who In Denmark Norway and Finland

The Who In Denmark Norway and Finland

2006, Squeeze Books
ISBN 91-630-8415-5

The scan does not do justice to a perfect white cover. This is an excellent read for anoraks dealing with the minutae of the Who in Denmark, Sweded and Finland. Packed with great colour pictures. Its a sister book to the Who in Sweden which I haven’t got thanks to a a robbing git on ebay.

Who Are You - Mark Wilkerson

Who Are You: The Life of Pete Townshend - Mark Wilkerson

2008
Omnibus Press
ISBN 978-1847722430

Since first reading Amazing Journey, I didn't think it would be topped as a biography of Pete Townshend.

It has by the revised version, published now by a mainstream publishing house (Amazing Journey was self published), with access to a sympathetic and knowledgeable editor and access to the members of Townshend's inner circle, and to Pete himself. The cover photo is by Ross Halfin, reknowned for his stance that "The Who are the greatest band ever" and for not being associated with cash ins. The foreword is by Eddie Vedder another great supporter of Townshend and The Who.

Whereas Amazing Journey relied on press cuttings and second hand interviews and qutes to tell the story, Who Are You is able to include first hand recollections and versions.

For what is probably the definitive story of Townshend, just buy this book, the only thing that will come close will be when the autobiography is released.
